Jaguarundi (Herpailurus yaguarondi)

jaguarundi2.jpg

Length: 65 cm (30 inches) and 45 cm (20 in) of tail
Weight: 6 kg (13.2 lbs)
Range: Mexico, Central, and South American, small population introduced in Florida and has been rarely seen in the south west U.S. including Texas and Arizona
Population: Not known(It is important to keep their range open)
Threats: Loss of Habitat
My Comments: These are small and stocky cats. Actually, I read on wikipedia that they may have close genetic ties with pumas and even old world cheetahs. The local people call them “leoncillos” or “little lions”. They come in gray and red mixed litters. They can swim and eat small birds, reptiles, and small mammals like rabbits. I would guess since they swim that they couldn’t help to pass up a juicy frog or fish.

  1. We live 50 miles southwest of Tucson and yesterday we saw a jaguarundi in our barn by the house. This is the second time I have a sighting in the last two months. I am not sure I want to notify any agencies as we appreciate our rural, peaceful lifestyle. Any response and feedback regarding our sightings would be appreciated, thanks

  2. Was told by friend that he spotted a jaguarundi in his back yard eating cat food that he had tossed out. We live in North Texas. Think he was mistaken, or have they ever been seen this far north?

  3. My mother just saw one earlier this evening behind her house. She lives just north of Austin, and thought it was a black panther – so we’ve been doing some research and this was the best explanation.

  4. There have been sightings here for the past several years. I live 50 miles west of Savannah,Georgia in Evans County. The people that have seen it think it is a black panther, but is most likely a jaquarundi.

  5. Neighbor spotted a Jaquarundi in his yard, it came
from our backyard and crossed his yard then loped
out his driveway, he was sure as to what it was, had
looked it up on internet to be sure as to it’s name.
We live in central Florida, near Lecanto.

  6. My family lives near Spring Hill, FL, where they saw one at the side of the road.

  7. Umatilla, Florida close to Lake-Marion County line

South central ok. Near Leon ok.

  10. Suspected jaguarundi scaled stucco wall to 2nd floor patio. I heard this loud clasping sound. looked out and saw one dark brown cholocate paw. Animal couldn’t make it through the four inch opening and disappeared before I could get a better look. There is now a pronounced dent in the metal where it’s claw hit hardest. As well the paint is scraped off about an inch and a half. My cat was in attack mode. I live in Tucson foothills area, AZ.

  11. This past Monday (1-31-11) I took an off-road bike trip through Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Was walking my bike through some soft sand, came around the corner and saw what I though was a small, slender, dark-brown / grey Florida panther. I was told by park rangers that it was probably a Jaguarundi. I went home still thinking I saw a panther – then I started looking up photos of the Jaguarundi online and BINGO! No doubt in mind. I snapped 7 shots with my iphone, but upon magnification all you can make out is a blob walking away – no I’m not going to post the pics – I don’t want a bunch of “bigfoot” like photos out there over something I’m certain about.

  12. I also live in Tucson Az and have seen one on the far eastside of town Reddington Pass area in the early morning hours walking down a wash

  13. Early on the morning of June 27th, I saw a mother and baby while I was walking back to my cabin from the river at the Stephen Foster State Park in White Springs Florida. Wasn’t sure what I had seen, so we did research on Florida mammals and found matching pictures of these Jaguarundis. I saw a mother and Kitten. The kitten climbed a tree as the mother followed me back toward my cabin. It made a hoarse coughing barking sound.

  14. I saw a pair of black ones from my back window running across my back field, they were as close as 20 feet from my house .I live in Snowflake Arizona and this took place in september 2012.Thier running was more like continously leaping or like otter out of water.
